Move the couple to the West Coast of US, make Jeeves a former policeman who lost his right arm and you have exactly the situation. Jeeves and Wooster, Erle Stanley Gardner style. On the other hand Sidney Zoom's attitude toward he culprit was very unusual for our time and speaking honestly refreshing. I also had to suspend my disbelief at one point which seemed pretty improbable to me. From all her descriptions and actions she appeared to be a typical spoiled brat. On the negative side I really did not care about the woman in question. Where there is a gun there must be a dead body, right? This time they found a lone woman in a secluded spot who was desperately trying to get rid off a recently fired gun and a purse with a huge diamond. Walk around the night streets sometimes stumbling upon crime and sometimes helping the police with investigation. A mysterious guy Sidney Zoom and his former police dog This time was not an exception and all the policemen were exceptionally retarded. In addition for Lester Leith to always be ahead of police the latter had to be slightly deficient when it comes to mental abilities. It was nice to see other side of Gardner as a writer, but he has not delivered anything new to that type of character. This time Gardner version outsmarted both police and other robbers to get his greedy hands on some nice jewelry. Lester Leith was a genius criminal, a type first appearing as Arsène Lupin in the beginning of twentieth century and beaten to death since then. The only reason I did not rate this tale with perfect rating was the fact that Mason resolved the case before it went to court where his performances were always extraordinary. I am sure Gardner created a new world record when it comes to their number per page. Count the number of plot twists and prepare to be blown away.

In case anybody is still unconvinced Erle Stanley Gardner could write great mysteries, read this novella it it less that 60 pages long. Mason accompanied by his usual sidekicks Della Street and Paul Drake had to do some undercover investigations.

His mother did not think her daughter-in-law was an appropriate in social standing and would not mind to see her gone. He was desperately trying to avoid a scandal (the bane of wealthy people). Perry Mason was hired by a wealthy guy to investigate a mysterious disappearance of his young wife. This is the main and only reason I read the book.
